Reach Out and Read is a national, evidenced-based program, designed to give young children a foundation for success by incorporating age-appropriate books into pediatric care and encouraging parents to read with their children.
When funding for Reach Out and Read in Massachusetts was eliminated last year, the Cape and Islands United Way stepped in to save it by underwriting the cost of the program locally and agreeing to organize volunteers to staff and administer the program.
Women United volunteer Amy Vandersall, a retired teacher, is coordinating Reach Out and Read on the Cape and Islands as the liaison with our local pediatric offices. With plans to expand the program to include “take a book” libraries at various parent-serving locations, book drives, bulletin boards and more – Amy can use some help. If you are interested in volunteering, please let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org.
